Soul & Funk Acts
Soul Music combines elements of African American gospel music and Rhythm and Blues and it originated in the USA in the 1950s and 60s.
Funk Music is musical genre consisting of a mixture of Soul Music, Jazz and R&B. Popular during the late 1960s-early 1970s, Funk Music is easily recognised by its distinct musical style and the legendary James Brown was one of the first artists to use funk as a main distinguishing feature of his sound. Other artists representative of the Funk genre include, The Temptations, Prince and Kool and the Gang.
Motown (a blend of the words Motor and Town) is a nickname for Detroit in the US state of Michigan and is a style of Soul music with a distinct pop influence. The music produced by the Motown Record company is often referred to as ‘The Motown Sound’ and some of its best-known artists include the likes of The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. Motown is also said to have had a major influence on several non-Motown artists such as The Foundations and Dusty Springfield.
