Duck Herding is one of our most popular outdoor team building activities. This hilariously entertaining activity combines teamwork, good communication and listening skills…and lots of patience!
Delegates who have never experienced duck herding will often be heard before the activity starts wondering if real ducks and dogs are used for the activity. Not only are there real ducks, but there are real geese and sheepdogs too!
Participants will learn some interesting facts, background knowledge and information on the traditional skill of sheepdog handling. Our expert will also teach teams all the commands and tips on how to get the most from this activity.
Teams will then work together with highly trained sheep dogs to guide a group of ducks around a series of obstacles and eventually into a closing pen. This truly memorable activity is certainly harder than it looks and as well as being a fantastic icebreaker, it can also help strengthen communication skills within the workplace.
Duck Herding is suitable for all abilities, age ranges and levels of fitness, making this activity a very accessible choice for events such as corporate team building, staff away days and hen and stag dos. The activity is great fun for those who participate, but it is highly amusing for spectators as well.
The activity is available as part of our ‘Great Outdoors’ Multi Activity Day along with Segway Driving, Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting and Archery. We also offer informative and entertaining Duck Herding Displays for events such as Family Fun Days.

14:00 - ACTIVITY START
A small course consisting of obstacles such as tunnels and slides is set up ready for the event to start. The activity begins with a briefing from our expert sheepdog handler where delegates will learn the vital ways in which to control the dogs using whistle commands such as go quickly, go slowly, left, right and stop. Participants will also learn educational and fascinating background knowledge about duck herding and sheepdog handling.
Once fully briefed, delegates will have to work as a team to try to maneuver a small flock of Indian Runner Ducks and a small gaggle of Geese from one side of the obstacle course to the other. Sounds easy? It’s certainly not as easy at it seems!
15:00 - OPTIONAL REFRESHMENT BREAK
Once the obstacle course has been conquered, participants must then put their newly found skills to the test again by guiding the ducks/geese around the parameter of the event area using a sheepdog and into a holding pen at the end. The animals will then be given a rest as the group is split up. Some of the delegates become 'sheep' and have to link arms in a huddle. They are then blindfolded and are guided from afar by the remaining delegates who use the same whistle commands that were taught at the beginning of the session. Listening and communication skills are really put to the test as the 'sheep' have to work as a team to remember what the whistle commands mean.
By the end of the session, participants will have learnt a new skill with this highly memorable, fun and entertaining activity.
16:15 - ACTIVITY END
*Example format only. Timings based on an approximate 1.5-2 hour activity duration for 15 people. Format subject to change on the event day depending on conditions that may be beyond the control of our facilitator. Refreshments usually provided by your chosen venue as part of your delegate package.
